CPPW Tobacco Control Grant

Through federal stimulus funding channeled through the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, CAI provided extensive training and technical support to expand and enhance tobacco control efforts in New York City. The project particularly focused on ways to support tobacco control aims through policy, systems and environmental changes.

CAI provided tailored training on tobacco dependence, counseling and treatment to selected staff from Assertive Community Treatment Programs and Supportive Housing Programs, reaching 249 staff members in 2010 alone. CAI also assisted outpatient substance abuse treatment programs implementing tobacco dependence counseling and policy change in their facilities. CAI assisted the City University of New York in expanding CUNY’s smoke-free aid policies and the implementation of cessation support for students and faculty. Under the project, CAI also provided leadership training and development support for the New York City Coalition for a Smoke-Free City, helping build a robust citywide network of trained tobacco control activists.
